As homeowners enter the golden years of their lives, finding accessible and accommodating living situations can be stressful and complicated. But according to several local building and design companies, staying in your beloved long-time home, or “aging in place,” is easier than you might think.

What is the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator? This is an amazing question that I get asked a lot, even from my siblings. The problem is many people use “interior designer” and “interior decorator” interchangeably. However, the two professions are very different.

While many of us are home due to the pandemic, we find ourselves focusing more on our homes. Whether it is cleaning, organizing, or de-cluttering. Perhaps we feel some inspiration for something new—wanting to put a new coat of paint on the walls, purchase new furniture, or tackle an entire room. So why not consider hiring an interior designer?

Last week, Michel, my husband stated he cannot wait until we remodel our kitchen because he knows it will look great and be a lot more functional than it is currently. Of course, I thanked him for the compliment. I then informed him that he had a “twofer” with me; two designers in one.

“Do I contact the contractor first? I do not know where to begin.” This powerful statement made me realize there are more “Anabell’s” out in this world wondering how and where to begin. I asked Anabell if she thinks walls will be removed and spaces will be reconfigured. “Yes,” she replied. She wants to rearrange her loft area for a master bedroom, master bathroom, walk-in closet, and maybe a studio or office space too. Plus, we cannot forget about Prairie, her adorable dog that needs space up there as well.

The other day my husband, Michel, asked what it would take for him to have a Man Cave. He is not from the design or construction industry, so this question is coming from the heart. At first, I was insulted. “Why do you need a Man Cave? You have an entire house!” After I took a deep breath and gathered my thoughts, I looked around the entire house. No, my husband does not have the entire house. It is the kiddos and I that have everything all around.
