How to make sawdust beautiful using deconstructive layers of wood and a hint of shimmer?

ASID MN Chapter once again held an amazing event sponsored by Select Surfaces. The challenge was to create something beautiful out of the mysterious item we received in the white box. This year it was saw dust. Yes, Charles Cabinets provided the saw dust for the designers to make something seemly unattractive into something stunning…

Julia Fristedt and Catherine Deutschlander made a Modern/Minimalist plate charger with loved ones in mind: an elevated breakfast in bed or a beautiful way to showcase the wine you will be serving to your amazing guests.

The Place Setting

  • With this set-up we decided to showcase the plate charger on a beautiful wood tray. The deep color was then achieved by burning the wood and shaving it. We also incorporate the white color in a modern home from the simple square plate and the wood pieces in the plate charger. It has layers of wood: sliced, shaved, spiraled, and then sawdust. Using tools that a cabinet maker would have on hand to make their masterpiece. Added a touch of shaved metal to incorporate the napkin ring holder.

The Wine Display

  • We know how important it is to feel welcomed and loved when entering your home. What better way than to display the irresistible wine you will be serving to your guests. This plate charger was created with resin, sawdust, gold flecks, and gold foil.

How does all of this relate back to my business?  Easy: Trusting oneself, getting out of your comfort zone, and enjoying the experience.  Yes, it’s going to be chaotic.  You will be experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the process.  Excited in the beginning, waiting and thinking it’s never going to end when the construction starts, being overjoyed when the cabinets get installed, and then back down to “Are you done yet!” ….

Yes, this ASID Design Challenge was the same.  I had to trust the process and myself.  I was a deer in the headlights when I found out we had to create something stunning from sawdust. My mind went blank. Luckily, I had a partner that could see what I couldn’t see. Julia saw my expression and we talked it through and started brain storming. She became me and I became one of my clients. It was a beautiful “AHA” moment. I had to listen to my intention, get out of my comfort zone, and enjoy the ride. It’s about collaborating and trusting each other.

Making something seemly unattractive into something stunning.
